Untitled (Spirit Caribou Pulling Parka of Woman, Child) is one of 46 previously unreleased prints from Cape Dorset that was featured in the 1994 McMichael Canadian Art Collection exhibition Cape Dorset Revisited (no. 19), accompanied by Susan Gustavison’s publication, Arctic Expressions: Inuit Art and the Canadian Eskimo Arts Council, 1961-1989.

Angotigaluk was the wife of the beloved Cape Dorset graphic artist Jamasie Teevee. About a dozen prints based on her drawings were published during her lifetime; another couple were released in the 1990s, including this delightful and somewhat enigmatic image. The print was originally untitled and later given the descriptive title Spirit Caribou Pulling Parka of Woman, Child. Although that title strives to be complete, it fails to encompass the wonderfully magical, humorous, yet mysterious quality of the image. The “spirit caribou” is surely a caribou-wolf hybrid creature, simultaneously charming and ferocious. Nevertheless, both the woman and her child seem totally unperturbed!
