Luke Anowtalik quite happily alternated between carving stone sculptures (see Lot 128) and creating whimsical and imaginative caribou antler compositions. Probably the best known of these are his “acrobat” figures with swivelling arms and legs. These scenes can comprise anywhere from one to a dozen or more figures. Acrobat Mother and Child is a very rare example that depicts a mother swinging with a child in her hood. It’s a truly charming, if improbable, image!

Literature: For an early single-figure version from c. 1971-72 see Darlene Coward Wight, The Faye and Bert Settler Collection (Winnipeg Art Gallery, 2004), p. 45. For larger versions of the subject see First Arts Auction, July 2020, Lot 114; George Swinton, Sculpture of the Inuit (Toronto, M&S, new edition 1992), fig. 863 (National Gallery of Canada collection). See also Walker’s Auctions, Nov. 2012, Lot 102; May 2013, Lot 241.
