SHEOJUK ETIDLOOIE (1932-1999) KINNGAIT (CAPE DORSET)
signed, "ᓯᐅᔪ".
Sheojuk’s composition is defined by its bold refusal to conform to the conventions of restraint. Beginning her drawing practice later in life, she approaches the page with a kind of unfiltered urgency: the birds swell to fill nearly every inch of the vertical sheet, pressing against the edges as if containment were never part of the plan. The margins are incidental: what matters is the fullness of form. Rendered in fevered, heavily worked lines of coloured pencil, the gulls appear almost swollen with presence. That they face in opposite directions only deepens the sense of contained motion, like sentinels pivoting in rhythm, surveying both past and future at once.
