An accident had rendered the elder Parr unable to hunt, and when Terry Ryan asked him to try drawing in the spring of 1961, he was happy to oblige. Parr created drawings informed by his memories as a traditional hunter on the land and sea. Parr’s intention for The Hunters was perhaps to commemorate the results of a particularly successful hunting trip, indeed the hunters seem almost boastful. Brilliantly printed by Iyola Kingwatsiak the figures are portrayed with the scratchy lines evoking Parr’s drawing style. Wonderful!
