ESTIMATE: $200 — $400
Kananginak Pootoogook, often called the “Audubon of the Arctic,” is best known for his magnificent depictions of Arctic wildlife, particularly birds and bears. Less known than his animal subjects, he also maintained a lifelong interest in depicting Inuit life on the land. The cover of the 1962 annual Cape Dorset Print Collection catalogue features a Kananginak engraving of a solitary Inuk building an igloo. This 1978 lithograph revisits the scene with a pair of Inuit constructing a snowhouse, their qamutik nearby. The haphazard placement of the reins and the hastily discarded harpoon make one wonder whether the construction was a matter of great urgency. This lithograph is also one of the earliest efforts of printmaker Pitseolak Niviaqsi, who was responsible for almost 350 lithographs in his illustrious career.
