Many communities throughout the north have stone that is unmistakable to the region, and Sanikiluaq’s argillite may as well have the town’s name imprinted into it. The stone’s finish and opaque colour range allow for both a softness and refinement to the final sculpture. Here, a bird’s outstretched wings float in the air, with all the focus being centred on the form of the work. There is an almost light, airy feel to the piece, counterintuitive to its very nature as a stone.
