This charming sculpture of a kneeling woman recalls the palm-sized ‘cannonball’ figures produced by Inukjuak sculptors such as Johnny Inukpuk, Isa Smiler, and Elijassiapik in the early 1950s. Unlike the more familiar mother-and-child variants, this figure holds an ulu (woman’s knife) in one hand and a taggut in the other, the latter a tool used to control the flames of a qulliq (seal oil lamp). Both graceful and tactile, the work delights the eye and fits beautifully in the hand.
