In the traditional Inuit belief system, there is a fluidity between the physical and spiritual worlds. The boundaries between humans, animals, and the spirit world are permeable, and all life forms are interconnected. It is not uncommon to see sculptures or graphics where the shaman transforms into an animal or where one animal morphs into another. Pitseolak Ashoona made several drawings of what she referred to as “sea dogs”, animals which existed in local legends that she had heard about but not observed. Whether this wonderful early Kinngait sculpture depicts a local legend or a spiritual metamorphosis is uncertain but the elegance and charm are beyond dispute!
