A self-taught and prolific artist, Pitseolak Ashoona produced thousands of drawings, and her prints were mainstays of the Cape Dorset print collections almost from the beginning. It is little wonder then that Pitseolak was chosen to be included in collections outside of the annuals, including several dedicated folios of her print work. In 1983, a collection of four stonecuts and stencils, and eight lithographs were printed featuring Pitseolak’s spirited figures, birds and spirits. Some works such as this lot and Attacked by Bees (lot 56 of this sale) show a negative event, but in a surprisingly elegant way; washes of colour created a moving water on the page, further creating a beautiful top-down view of the flotilla of kayaks racing to save their fellow man. The kayaks, though flat in texture, highlight their riders further against the roiling water, all with paddles that create a jumbled, linear mass through the work. Looking on in hopeful anticipation are three figures still at camp on the shore, as well as a singular rock cairn on the hill to the right of them, an ever so slightly dark and ominous presence to the scene against the colour present elsewhere.
