In the present work, Untitled (Skies and Seas: Airplanes over Whaling Boats and Seals), Pudlo Pudlat orchestrates a striking juxtaposition of tradition and modernity. Sailboats drift across the sea in calm formation, each one crowned with a vibrant flag, while sleek airplanes arc across the sky above. Between them, tiny seals dot the water’s surface, anchoring the scene in Arctic life. Pudlo, who began drawing after a hand injury ended his carving practice, became known for his playful yet thoughtful incorporation of southern technology into northern imagery. He was particularly fascinated by airplanes, which he viewed as emblems of change and curiosity, not intrusion (Blodgett, Pudlo: Thirty Years of Drawing, 1990, p. 11). This work captures that spirit, celebrating both innovation and continuity in a shared visual space.
