One of the earliest stars of the Qamani’tuaq print program, Simon Tookoome produced almost 80 prints in his career in his distinctive visual style. 1983 was a banner year for the artist, with 9 prints over a broad scope of subject matter.

The Couple is Kissing is a delightful showing of Tookoome’s figures; a couple are embracing, noses just barely touching as faces peek from warm hoods. Marth Noah’s handling of the stencils has allowed for mottled colours to define the coats of the couple, a subtle nod to their material’s texture. With a rare addition of text printed on the work, we are told that “These two that are betrothed are kissing.” Lovely.

First Arts extends our gratitude to Veronica Puskas for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
