This small textile by Janet Kigusiuq, shaped like a scraper or shovel, gathers a lively menagerie into its surface. Two grizzly bears, two dogs, and several gulls are stitched in felt and thread, their forms set against bands of tan and turquoise. One bear clasps a fish in its mouth, while the surrounding animals turn toward it, their gazes and postures suggesting a shared hunger and the chance to snatch the prize. Embroidered details lend texture to fur, feathers, and fins, while the patterned border frames the scene, transforming a domestic-sized object into a tableau of competition and survival.
