This contemporary cedar bark and spruce root clam gathering basket, made by an unidentified Haida weaver, is both functional and visually compelling. Strips of red cedar bark are worked into an “eye holes” pattern through crossed warp twining, the open weave allowing sand and water to slip easily away. A band of chevrons encircles the form, giving rhythm to the surface and drawing the eye around its structure. The cedar bark carries a warm, organic scent and a fibrous texture, grounding the basket in its material origins while celebrating the skill of its construction.
