Starting in the early 1970s, Bill Reid created his first limited edition prints, a collection now known for being significant in popularizing Haida art on a global scale. Based on Haida myths and stories, the series featured captivating graphic depictions by Reid, highlighting his ability to marry traditional Haida themes with a modern aesthetic. Haida Grizzly / Huaji is a particularly striking example from this time, as a classic colour scheme of black and red is framed in a symmetrical presentation of a Grizzly. While the Grizzly is the main character, its being is filled with smaller creatures; ovoid eyes peer from claws while curvy limbs flit between teeth and ears. This bear plays host to many things all sharing space within one form.
