Recollection of the Whalers Boat by a Pangnirtung artist is composed with the clarity and precision of a diagram. The central whaling vessel is drawn in profile, with sail, rudder, and covered holds clearly delineated. Surrounding it are the essential tools and equipment used in Arctic whaling: six oars, a paddle, a coiled rope, a harpoon head, toggling spear, powder horn, rifle, three bullets, four floats, two hooks, and a cooking pot. Each item is carefully isolated and given equal visual weight, allowing the viewer to take stock of what such an expedition required. The layout is structured and informative, not unlike a field guide, and offers a remarkable inventory of a practice once central to both survival and commerce.
