As part of the 1973 Annual Print Collection, Pudlo Pudlat produced a pair of mirrored companion images, Shaman’s Tent and this lot Caribou Tent. At first glance, they are charming profile views of northern, on the land domiciles, but a further reading shows that Pudlat was showing his southern audience that Inuit did not just live in igloos all year-round. These summer tents were originally constructed of animal hides atop a framework of driftwood or whale bones, and could easily be moved and reconstructed. Caribou Tent has the more innate sense of being made of multiple pieces that are stitched together, but the addition of the caribou’s head (with understandably surprised expression) adds a more familiar nod to Pudlat’s cheeky sense of humour in his works.
