To our eye, Dark Owl stands out as one of the most accomplished stonecuts for the extraordinary precision achieved. The bird’s form — its head, body, and plumage — is defined by Saggiaktok Saggiaktok with an intricate network of incised lines of varied shape and size, each mark carefully made to contribute to the layered rhythm of its feathers and the commanding presence of the figure. The figure is predominantly monochromatic, with the wings, top of the head, centre of the chest, and tip of the tail cast in deeper darks, while the broad, sweeping span of the wings settles into a softer shade of grey. Colour is introduced only through stencil, applied with restraint but striking effect: the sharp yellow of the eyes and the red of the beak punctuate the surface, sharpening the intensity and focus of the composition.
