Best known as a sculptor, particularly for his iconic dancing bears (see Lot 81), Pauta was also an accomplished draftsman In the 1960s and 70s he produced numerous drawings, more than forty of which were realized as engravings and stonecuts. His images, most often depicting Arctic wildlife, stand out for their dynamic compositions and fluid lines. Like his contemporary Kananginak Pootoogook, Pauta demonstrated equal mastery whether working in three dimensions or two.
