From the 2006 annual print collection, Scary Dream is an interesting intersection of Shuvinai Ashoona's artistic canon. Prior to her more fantastical visions, a hallmark of her early work was the patiently and painstakingly detailed ink line drawings, many featuring individually drawn stones, a nod to the rocky ground of her hometown. Later works, and many that we now immediately recognize as being Ashoona's, prominently showcase a distinctive array of monsters, hybrid animals, and otherworldly beings, some side by side to the residents of Kinngait. Here, a pair of nocturnal monsters surround the sitter, teeth and nails flashing brightly against the wash of green stones. The main monster almost fills the print, engulfing the sitter, as if seeping to the edge of the dream it inhabits.
