Maudie Rachel Okittuq, born in 1944 in Ikpiq (Thom Bay), Nunavut, is a pioneering Inuk sculptor from Taloyoak. Maudie began carving in 1968 and was among the first in her community to embrace the medium. Her works primarily feature evocative figures of shamans, spirits, and supernatural beings—grimacing, anguished, or dancing in metamorphosis. This lovely transformation is carved from Baffin Island serpentine, which was either imported for Maudie’s use or, alternatively, carved by her during her travels.
