Lively despite the monochromatic presentation, Snare is a charming example of not only Mona Ohoveluk Kuneyuna’s eye for designing scenes of arctic life, but also the subtle details a stonecut can have. A lone figure chases a bird towards a snare, stick in hand to further direct the bird around the rock cairns, and the bird is a splay of wings and feathers as it runs away. Upon a closer look, the bird’s body and the figure’s coat both sport subtly carved lines, likely representing both the bird’s feathers and the figure caribou skin clothes. There is movement and dimension in this work, despite its static nature.
