Widely considered one of the most influential Inuit and contemporary Canadian artists of this century, Annie Pootoogook made a name for herself with her simple depictions of everyday life in Kinngait. A Friend Visits was her last contribution to the Annual Print Collection, and keeps to a seemingly simple depiction of daily life in the north. A woman sits across from the viewer, amautiq partially taken off to be more comfortable. A big window behind the figure shows a neighbouring home with power lines stretching out and drifts of fluffy snow surrounding it. It’s easy to imagine the larger scene outside this vignette, wet boots by the door, a tea steaming away as casual conversation flows between the speakers.
