This lovely and very early Inukjuak Mother and Child is in many ways reminiscent of the wonderful Standing Woman from the First Arts July 2020 sale (Lot 2). In cataloguing the latter carving we wondered whether it might not be the work of Akeeaktashuk. Here the combination of unusually deep carving and finely incised and inlaid details makes us wonder again whether this gem is perhaps by the hand of the master. Regardless of authorship, Mother and Child stands as a masterpiece from the very earliest period of Inukjuak art.
