More than any other Arviat sculptor, Eva Talooki used glass beads to embellish her stone and antler carvings. Mostly she fashioned simple strands to decorate her works (see Lot 42), but occasionally she sheathed her figures in densely sewn beadwork garments. Here the artist fashioned a beadwork replica of a traditional Kivalliq Region beadwork amautiq, complete with fringe. Because the sculpture is relatively small and the beads relatively large, the effect is almost disorienting. It is almost as if Talooki has created a fetish-like doll invested with some sort of supernatural potency. It’s a fascinating and quite powerful little sculpture.
