There is an apocryphal tale about an Inuit sculptor being interviewed and when asked how he carved such wonderful bears responded, “It’s simple, you just take away everything that isn’t a bear.” One senses that Henry Evaluardjuk instinctively knew exactly what to remove to perfectly capture whichever animal he chose to carve. Evaluardjuk’s best works, typified by this wonderful Arctic Fox, are almost photographic, not only in their naturalism but also in the way they seem to capture a fleeting moment in time. We love how this fox is just so joyfully alive, seemingly trotting along with a delightfully cocksure attitude. Lovely!
