Kigusiuq’s early drawings were busy affairs, drawn almost in black-and-white. When she “discovered” colour in the late 1980s she began using it with increasing intensity; at the same time her figures became larger and fewer as time went on. Kigusiuq’s drawings of the late 1990s and early 2000s reveal a heightened sense of colour for its own sake, to the degree that some of her landscapes are almost abstract colour fields. This charming drawing is possibly a self-portrait of Kigusiuq and her late husband Mark Uqayuittuq. They are shown in a “landscape” setting of shifting bands of colour. As was typical of her late style, Kigusiuq used the white paper not as background but as delineation of certain details in the figures.
