After a disastrous fire in December 1977, the 1978 Baker Lake Print Collection almost didn't happen. However, as Faye Settler noted in the collection catalogue's forward, "John Evans, artistic advisor to the Co-op and the draughtsmen and printmakers were not easily discouraged. There would be a 1978 collection" [1]! Beginning from scratch as all the accumulated drawings had been lost to the fire, Jessie Oonark and others created new works for the collection on the materials slowly gathered and found within the community. Ikaluq [Iqaluk] Ulu (Fish Ulu) was one of six prints that Jessie produced that year, a colourful portrayal of a giant fish with an Ulu as a tail. This work has many of the recognizable traits of a print by Jessie, especially in the facial features of both human and fish figures, and also has the added playfulness many have come to love in her. work.

1. Faye Settler, Baker Lake 1978 Prints / Estampes, (Sanavik Co-operative: Baker Lake, 1978), unpaginated.
