In his early works, Roy Thomas drew considerable inspiration from the "x-ray" style of Norval Morrisseau, By the 1980s, his style evolved and he produced brilliantly original works that filtered the traditional themes and subjects of the Woodlands School through his own unique vision. In Time What Can Call Our Own, painted in 1985, we sense an almost Surrealist aesthetic.  Here, Thomas has taken the familiar subject of a skein of geese and reconfigures the scene to marvellous effect. Here, the head of the lead bird is pictured in profile as it pierces through two sets of clouds. Its two wings, painted with gossamer fine strokes of acrylic, are shown from an aerial perspective so that they enshroud the rest of the flock. Such a visual disruption, when combined with the artist's adept skill, allows for the viewer to re-examine the majesty of the animal and the marvel of flight.
