Saul Williams began to paint at the encouragement of Dr. Mary Black, a visiting linguist for whom Williams worked, providing Black with translation from the visiting elders as well as performing household chores. Presently, Williams is an education director with the North Caribou Lake Education Authority. In 2017, he co-curated the exhibition, Anishinaabeg: Art & Power at the Royal Ontario Museum.

The influence of Carl Ray can be strongly felt in Williams's works. His elegant lines and segmentation all show a clear homage to Ray. Whereas Morrisseau's formlines tend to obviously demarcate his forms, William's suggest a more complex relationship of line and colour.

Ground Hog
is a strong image in its dramatic design, with the animal burrowing at a sharp diagonal across the sheet. This pitch of its tunnelling, along with its wide eyes, suggest that the animal is engrossed on the task at hand: excavation.
