One of the brilliantly talented artist-children of Jessie Oonark, Mamnguqsualuk is famous for her depictions of legends and stories, particularly the famous Kiviuq story cycle. While this work on cloth doesn’t seem to depict a particular legend, it is very much in keeping with Mamnguqsualuk’s penchant for showing figures engaged in struggle or opposition. The artist also enjoyed presenting narratives that are episodic rather than linear. This fascinating composition apparently shows five separate “mini-scenes” of hunting or combat!
