In a community where most artists were working in stone, Eekerkik chose caribou antler as his preferred medium. Unlike most carvers who worked with the natural shapes suggested by the raw material, Eekerkik eschewed the monolithic (or its antler equivalent) and constructed his compositions with a multitude of elements and materials. Another revolutionary aspect of Eekerkik’s oeuvre was his adornment of his caribou antler elements. Eeekerkik would literally torch areas of his surfaces as a manner of patination.
