Elton Lafontaine was born in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1974. He moved to British Columbia as a young adult and began to seek teachers and opportunities to carve Northwest Coast pieces. He trained with Emile Thibert who was also a prairie artist working in Northwest Coast style.
Portrait masks are used to relate individual stories and histories as oral culture is passed onto the next generation.
