This late 19th-century hand drum, likely crafted by a Plains artist, embodies the rich heritage of Indigenous craftsmanship. Measuring 16.5 inches, it features rawhide stretched tightly over a wooden frame, secured by rope and iron nails. The drum's surface is adorned with enigmatic geometric forms, predominantly triangles, which could represent dwellings, natural elements, or symbolic motifs reflective of Plains life and beliefs. These triangles, a recurring motif in many Plains cultures, symbolize resilience and stability, epitomizing the enduring spirit of these communities. The drum's intricate iconography invites contemplation, symbolizing a confluence of meanings rather than a singular narrative.
