Drawings by Kigusiuq from early in her career in the 1970s are quite complex, with little colour, and often incorporating numerous small, busy figures. Toward the end of her life Kigusiuq designed her pictures with fewer, larger figures and large fields of colour, even going so far as to create pure semi-abstract landscapes or as can be seen in this drawing, as a narrative set in a landscape. In this fine drawing the artist plays with both colour and the white paper in different ways: solid blocks of colour are used for the water and the fish; lovely swirls of colour are carefully blended to “paint” the shoreline and the stones that form the weir; and Kigusiuq uses the white of the paper to define the figures of the fishers. We love the way all of these elements are so beautifully balanced in the composition.
As I remember, my uncle Quingangnaq used to fish with a spear all the time. When the mosquitoes came, in July, we would make a fish weir and we would spear the fish. It is a lot of fun. Sometimes we would just grab them and sometimes spear them. The bigger ones were Arctic char…. It was hard after that, as we had to carry the fish, clean them, and store them.
