An often depicted animal throughout his career, Pudlo Pudlat’s muskox are a constant delight. The large, hulking animal is usually depicted with sweeping fur and almost delicate feet and features, an ever present fixture of the tundra. We are treated to some of Pudlo’s own words about this work in the Annual Print Collection’s catalogue, and he is as factual as ever with his thoughts!
“I like this print best. I think people in the South will like it very much. I never saw any animal like that. I saw a muskox over near Resolute Bay –a real one– but it didn’t look anything like that! … Musk oxen don’t usually have hair like that, but that is just a picture. A pencil can’t make real fur; it’s just a pencil.” [1]
