Anthony Chee Emerson is a Navajo artist known for his stylized landscapes and animals. In Composition with Horses, we are treated to Anthony’s recognizable profile of running horses, but a departure from the more punchy, monochrome depictions of horses or buffalo that he has often repeated. Here, each horse is a marbled combination of colours that is further highlighted with gold against the ombre sky. Printed and hand coloured on black paper, there is a moody feel to the work, and as flat as their outlines are, there is a palpable feeling to the horse as they gallop across the skyline.
