Lucy Qinnuayuak, a prolific graphic artist from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), returned often to the figure of the owl, an enduring motif in her work and, perhaps, a kindred spirit. In Winter Owl, she renders the bird not as a symbol of wisdom or fear, but as something far more delightful: strange, expressive, and joyfully animated. Its wide eyes seem more curious than watchful, its feet and wings splayed in a posture of cheerful unpredictability. Qinnuayuak’s line is spare but assured, bending reality just enough to let personality shine through. This is an owl not of nature documentaries, but of stories told aloud; part observation, part imagination, wholly her own.
