Figure in Striped Clothing is one of only two known textile works by Jessie Oonark that served as the imagery source for a print of the same name, a rarity in the Canadian Arctic where prints typically originated from exclusive drawings rather than fabric works. While the print and wall hanging share a nearly identical composition, the print stands out with its clean, graphic lines and a restrained palette of tan and deep blue (almost black). This simplicity emphasizes the strong contrasts and stylized form, making the central figure's presence particularly striking.

References: This image is illustrated along the original work on cloth by Oonark in Bernadette Driscoll, Baker Lake Prints & Print-Drawings 1970-76, (Winnipeg: Winnipeg Art Gallery, 1983), p. 74 (the print is on the cover of the catalogue as well). Driscoll discusses the print on p. 10. The original work on cloth is also illustrated in Jean Blodgett and Marie Bouchard, Jessie Oonark: A Retrospective, (Winnipeg: Winnipeg Art Gallery, 1986), cat. 49, p. 83. Another print created from a wall hanging is Magic Circle, 1971 #3 (see Blodgett and Bouchard, cats. 50-51, pp. 118-119. We make the assertion that Voice from My Dreams, (1973 #3) is another such print (see First Arts, 12 Sept 2024, Lot 28).
