Literature

James Houston, Eskimo Prints, Barre, Massachusetts: Barre Publishers, 1967), p, 80-1, reproduced p. 81.  Houston writes, "The imagery invoked in Lucy's stencil of Bird with a Fish stands half way between a free and primitive drawing and formalized design.  This work is closely related to the women's sewing art of skin applique which uses the practice of folding pieces of skin and cutting patterns.  The white, egg shaped mask with eyes and the bold use of colour is very unusal." (p. 80).
