By the 1990s, Lucy Tasseor Tutsweetok's physical strength had diminished and she often relied on a wheelchair. But her artistic vision remained intact. Determined to see her distinct sculptural language endure, Lucy passed it on not broadly or theoretically but intimately to her daughter, Elisapee, who became an increasingly active carving partner, and to her daughter-in-law, Mary Tutsweetok. This was not simply a matter of technique. It was a conscious act of inheritance, a matrilineal transmission of form and meaning. In the present work, that kinship of style is immediately evident: in the slight, abstracted faces that press gently together, in the density of the composition that seems to cradle rather than crowd. On the reverse of the carving,  a small, quiet joy awaits: a radiant shining sun beams above a snowhouse.
