As noted elsewhere, the present work recalls the brief but inventive 1960s and 70s period when artists in Canada's Eastern Arctic explored whale bone’s expressive potential. As in lots 58 and 60 this work is carved from an exceptionally porous section of whale bone. This kneeling figure is a marvel of both material and survival. The delicacy of its structure, the hollowed vessel, articulated arms, and blocky legs, makes its intact arrival from the North to Ontario something close to miraculous!
