Peter Sevoga is best known for his wonderfully bulky mid-1970s compositions of mothers and children, or family groups huddled together, which rank among the finest sculptures produced in Qamani’tuaq. This intriguing example is more experimental in nature: the mother and child are highly abstracted, and Sevoga has added human and animal spirits that project from the central figures. With its rough-hewn finish, the sculpture almost seems to emulate the aesthetic of neighbouring Arviat.
