Animal illustrates Miki’s signature style, which is characterized by a simplicity of line and form that allows the natural beauty of his materials, in this case a grey-green steatite, to shine through. With great economy of means, the artist captures the essential form of his subject while doing so on an almost miniature scale. The adage “less is more” comes to mind as we turn the work over in our palm to admire it from all angles.

For a similar sized work from c. 1979, see the work by Miki in Robert Kardosh, Vision and Form: The Norman Zepp - Judith Varga Collection of Inuit Art, exh.cat., (Vancouver: Marion Scott Gallery, 2003), p. 113, cat. no. 88. For additional works by the artist, see the section on the artist in Norman Zepp, Pure Vision: The Keewatin Spirit, (Regina: Norman Mackenzie Art Gallery, 1986), pp. 96-107. For other examples and for the artist’s discussion on his carving, see Bernedette Driscoll, Eskimo Point / Arviat, (Winnipeg: Winnipeg Art Gallery, 1982), pp. 22, 24, 26, 29; cats. 46-48.
