Son of the respected sculptors Ookpik and Mark Pitseolak and grandson of the famous artist, historian, and photographer Peter Pitseolak, Jamasee’s funky and very contemporary stone creations (motorcycles, guitars, shoes, tables and chairs, handguns, etc.) are in some ways the sculptural equivalent of the drawings of the famous Annie Pootoogook (1969-2016). Furthermore, this whimsical pair of eyeglasses in particular reminds us of Annie’s graphic depictions of her grandmother Pitseolak Ashoona’s signature specs! Rather than leave the lens area empty and thus transparent, Jamasie has instead inset pieces of beautiful light green serpentine which, at least when viewed from behind, gives the viewer the impression of looking out at the summer tundra. Marvellous!
