Often quirky and sometimes quite surreal, his carvings frequently exhibit transformation or otherwise offbeat imagery. He was recognized as a singular talent by George Swinton, who included this sculpture in his important book Sculpture of the Inuit. Napartik’s Hunter’s Thoughts of a Polar Bear is an enigmatic work that might just as easily have been titled Polar Bear Shaman. The work has a sombre, almost brooding presence. Had it been carved on a much smaller scale we imagine that it could have been used as a powerful amulet.Provenance
