Henry Napartuk was a maverick artist whose highly distinctive sculptures did not conform to the straightforward naturalistic styles so prevalent in the Nunavik region in the 1960s and 1970s. Often quirky and sometimes quite surreal, his carvings frequently exhibit transformation or otherwise offbeat imagery. He was recognized as a singular talent by George Swinton, who included this sculpture in his important book Sculpture of the Inuit. Napartik’s Hunter’s Thoughts of a Polar Bear is an enigmatic work that might just as easily have been titled Polar Bear Shaman. The work has a sombre, almost brooding presence. Had it been carved on a much smaller scale we imagine that it could have been used as a powerful amulet.
