Iyola worked for most of his adult life as a printmaker at the Cape Dorset print atelier where his tremendous skill at cutting stone was evident in many of the most important graphic works from the community including the iconic Enchanted Owl. It comes as no surprise therefore that Iyola’s sculptural works are of the highest calibre. We love the fierce energy of this Surfacing Polar Bear, comprising only its head that has just emerged from the water. Despite its rather sinister dentition, the animal displays an almost jovial expression. We marvel at the time and patience required to carve such a fantastic open mouth. Wonderful!
