Although perhaps better known for his works in caribou antler, Jacob Irkok was a supremely talented stone carver. Irkok produced a veritable menagerie of animals from air, land, and sea but seemed to have a great affection for the caribou. His simplified forms of swimming caribou were stylish and elegant, and his silhouetted rearing caribou were visually striking. This powerful composition of a bear with prey seems a nod to Irkoks’ friend and contemporary Andy Mamgark.
