Arnasungaaq’s brilliance as a portrayer of muskoxen has meant that his human subjects are sometimes overlooked. Barnabus created numerous powerful and moving depictions of hunters (often shown with their muskox prey or bear adversaries), mothers with children, and occasional single figures of men and women.
Waving Figure is in our opinion one of the finer small examples of his work from his later period (perhaps c. 1995-2000). We say “smaller” because of the work’s actual dimensions, but in fact the work is quite monumental. The figure probably depicts a woman, but possibly a child. It is blocky in overall appearance but in no way crude; in fact, as the video attests, the work is remarkably fully realized and very pleasing from every angle.
