Joanasi Kayakjuak was the father of the well-known Ottawa-based artist Silas Kayakjuak, who specializes in miniature carvings in a variety of materials. Joanasi carved mostly animal subjects. Standing Caribou is a classic example of early Sanirajaq carving: naïve yet beautifully naturalistic, with a tentative air but exuding a sensitive quality and charm that make the work highly appealing.
