Sheojuk began drawing late in life, decades after other Cape Dorset artists of her generation, and became almost an overnight sensation in the 1990s. Like many Inuit who came to drawing as elders, Sheojuk’s drawings and prints are naïve, almost childlike in their simplicity. Hers in particular have a directness and clarity that make them seem simultaneously ancient and very modern. Perhaps the magic ingredient that makes this possible for Sheojuk is unselfconsciousness.
